Housing Authority meets the Superheroes

The Superheroes were at it again today!! Today we ventured to the Nevada Housing Authority to see Carol Branham and some of her residents. It was a very fun day for the Superheroes going door to door spreading kindness.

The day started off on a bit of a solemn note but I will get into that later, but it didn’t keep the Superheroes down. In fact they were
flying high today with a few of them even taking flight off a short step stool of course this wasn’t to Mrs. Murphy’s liking but it was fun to watch. After the flying display it was time to head off and spread our joy.
Once again the Superheroes were excited because we got to ride the bus again. A big Superhero thank you goes out Rick Kennedy from Reinhart Christian Church for bringing and driving the bus for us
today it was such a huge help!! We were on the bus and on our way.
Once we got there we were greeted by Carol and Amanda who were setting up for the Bingo game later on that day. We handed out a few hearts to those early arrivals then set out to go door to door. We stopped at several different apartments and even stopped a few people on the street to spread our kindness. Once again they went above and beyond and spread a little more joy to some dogs along the way. I do not know how many people we saw but I know we
made quite a few people smile today.
Before we left we had just enough time for a quick game of Bingo against a few of the residents and boy was it fun. Not only did we get to learn a few letters and numbers but we had a great time playing. On top of all of this one of our Superheroes even won the game, which earned the Superheroes all a prize. The Superheroes work here was done so we posed for a couple more pictures and boarded the bus and were headed back to school from another
successful mission.
I mentioned before that the day started off a solemn one and I will explain that. It is with a very heavy heart that I must say it was my last mission with the Nevada Superheroes. I am leaving Nevada to chase my dreams and spread kindness of my own. I am going to miss the blog the Superheroes and everyone involved with them. I have poured my heart and soul into this group and wish them nothing but success in the future. I know that they will be in
capable hands and will go on doing great things for this community. It is just hard to say goodbye. I promise you this where I am going there will be another Superhero group and one day we may join up and do a super mission.
Like I have said before and I will say one last time. You don’t have to wear a cape to be a Superhero you don’t even have to part of a group just go out and be your own Superhero of Kindness. But seriously I have to admit it is very cool to wear that cape!!

Superheroes visit Joe Clarck Residents

I know it has been awhile since I have updated the blog but believe me the Superheroes have been out and about. Our last mission we ventured out to the Joe Clark Assisted living where we met some of their residents and kind staff. It was also the first time we met since we won the award so of course we had to pose for a picture with it first!!
The adventure started out a little different than normal, usually we walk to our missions but for this one we enlisted a little help from the bus company to get us there. Always excited to go on missions the bus just added to the excitement and raised the energy level to an all-time high. Once on the bus we started to focus on the mission and we went over what we were going to do and to remember what we were there for. We explained to the Superheroes that we were entering into people’s homes so be respectful and polite.
Well the time had come we arrived at the facility and were greeted by Stephanie and Lacey. I am sure they did not know what to expect because them seemed a bit overwhelmed when 9 caped up Superheroes came charging through the door. We got our game plan and we were off and running literally!!  Stephanie and Lacey were kind enough to show us around and take us around to each resident’s room. There was a surprise behind and in front of every
door. The residents did not know we were coming so when we came in they were very surprised, and the kids were very interested in everything in all the rooms.
Some rooms had a two people living there and then some only had one. Some had lots of pictures and art on the wall while others had plenty of stuff to play with. The favorite rooms for the Superheroes were the ones with pets. Not only do the Superheroes spread
kindness to people but it looks like they share the love with animals as well. I know for a fact that a few dogs and cats lives were changed as well by the Superheroes. The Superheroes always just seem to go above and beyond their normal call of duty.
While we visited with the residents and a few family members that were present as well I know that we had succeeded in our mission to bring a lot of smiles to a few people. I do not know if the
Superheroes will remember this mission in years to come but I know I will. I love to see the kids interact with the senior citizens and hear the conversations that they have. It is so true and honest. I know I came out that day with a bigger heart and an even bigger smile. Even though it was very stressful to make sure we didn’t break a precious memory or let a pet loose into the hall.
All in all this entire mission was very successful and I think the

Superheroes really enjoyed this mission. I know thinking back on it I really loved going. It just reminds me that everyday a simple act can change a person’s day and can take it from bad to good. Like I have said over and over you do not need a cape to be a Superhero just a big heart and a kind soul. But seriously how cool are those capes

Big Night for the little Superheroes!!

March 2, 2013 was a big day for some little Superheroes. The Superheroes of Kindness were awarded the 2012 Community Involvement Pace Setter Award also known as the Wayne Neal award by the Nevada/Vernon County Chamber of Commerce. This award is given to those who show a commitment to better their community through getting other people involved. Award nominees and winners are determined by members of the chamber.
The Superheroes are not ones that go out and seek the attention we just enjoy spreading kindness to everyone we meet. It is such an honor just to be nominated for this award let alone win it. The four other nominees do great things for the Nevada Community as well and deserve the award just as much as we do.
I could not be happier for the Superheroes and what they have achieved so far in their short time of spreading kindness. We have only been a part of the community for a little over a year and to be recognized says a lot for the impact that they have. It was a tough road to get the Superheroes started, if you have read the other blog posts you know what I am talking about. Not to rehash the entire story but I really need to thank St. Marys School and Nancy Coffer and Megan Murphy for giving this idea a chance. If not for them believing in the idea of the Superheroes then we would never be in the place that we are now. There are so many other people to thank that I hate to list them as I might forget someone but there are a few that need to be named.
First is Dana Redburn Parks Director for the City of Nevada and my boss. She let me run with this idea of the Superheroes and has been a huge supporter since the start. She is always open to the ideas I have for the Superheroes and encourages me to think outside the box. Also the support of all my family and friends, I am sure they get tired of me telling stories of the Superheroes and the stuff we have done and the things we have coming up in the future. The bad thing is that they are stuck with them now because the Superheroes have so much more in store.  A big thank you goes to Denise Scheibmeir and her dedication and support of the Superheroes, she has done so much behind the scenes and has even helped us out on a mission this past year.
Last and certainly not least is Kristal Burns. She is the originator of the Superheroes and the person that trusted me enough to start my own group here in Nevada. It seems like yesterday I sent a simple message to a Facebook page dedicated to Superheroes of Kindness hoping for a response. When that response came I never in my dreams thought that it would get to this point so quickly. I have to thank her for trusting me to uphold her ideas of being a Superhero and for steering me in the right direction. She is truly the person that deserves to be honored for her idea and letting me borrow it.
As I see it the bar has been raised and now we have go above and beyond what we have done before. We have to go more places and spread more kindness. We are here to inspire others to do good things and it looks like it is working.

Thank-you again everyone and thank you

Nevada for supporting the Superheroes!!

Nevada Superheroes Turn 1!!!

So a year comes and goes very fast and that is the case for Superheroes as well.  On December 6th, 2012 the Nevada Superheroes of Kindness celebrated their first birthday! The past year has been great with all the missions that we have been on, and the smiles that we have brought to so many people.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think that the Superheroes would be what they are today in just one short year.
When we went on the first mission to thank Erica for the fabric for our capes never did I think that would lead to us being asked to honor our Veteran’s at the parade this year.  Many of our missions have been small in scale but their impact has stretched far beyond.  Every now and then I am reminded of this when someone asks about the Superheroes and they do not even live in Nevada. I am so glad and so proud of the Superheroes for all they do and all the smiles that they bring.
People often come up to me and thank me for the Superheroes but I cannot take any of the credit on this one.  I may have started the group but the Superheroes do all the hard work.  I mean think about it, how awkward would it be if it was just me walking around in a cape handing out hearts to people.  Not only are the Superheroes very adorable and easy to love they actually get the idea of spreading kindness.  I have told many people this, especially after they ask them questions about why they wear the cape and they are amazed by the answer they receive.  We do not rehearse answers or tell them what to say. Before they get their capes we read them “Have you filled a Bucket Today” and explain how that applies to being a Superhero and then before each mission we explain why we are going out and ask them why this is a special mission that is all we do.   They get it and I would like to think it makes them feel good to do these good things for other people.  I know it makes me feel very good to see and hear them with the people we visit and see the smiles they bring.
I am so very happy to celebrate this birthday after all the hard work that went into getting the program started.  I will cherish all the Superheroes that have the great privilege to wear the cape and spread happiness but that first class will hold a very special place in my heart.  I was so very happy that many of them even got to join in on the birthday party.  They still spread the kindness even though they don’t go on the missions and wear the capes all that often.  I even appreciate that they all remember me and some even go out of their way to give me a hug and tell me hello whenever and where ever they see me, trust me that never gets old.  I am honored by the fact that I have made such an impact on them that they remember, and I hope they never forget the year they first became a Superhero because I know I never will.

I know this blog is not the light hearted and witty post that you have come accustomed to with the Superheroes but I really felt the need to tell you how the Superheroes have affected me and my life.  I also want to send a great big thank you to St. Mary’s School , they took a true leap of faith in letting me start my program in their school.  Thank you to Nancy, Ruth, and especially Megan for working with me and letting me disrupt the school day once or twice a month to take the Superheroes on their missions.  I look forward to many more years of classes and hope to one day have a school full of caped up Superheroes.

I also want to thank all of the media outlets that have also supported the Superheroes along the way as well.  One of our biggest supporters is the Nevada Daily Mail, they are always there to cover anything we do, and if they can’t make it all I have to do is send them something and they are more than happy to add it to the paper.  Also the Catholic Key has been a great supporter as well.  They have had the Superheroes in their publication a couple of times as well.  Last but not least is KSN and KODE for their support and coming to Nevada a couple times to interview the Superheroes.  Big thanks to Katie Love and Brad Douglas for coming to town and putting our small capes on the big screen.  All of these people help to spread the word of kindness that we are all about.
I have rambled long enough but there is one more person I need to thank and that is you!

That’s right I want to thank you for reading this blog and spreading the word about the Superheroes.  This blog has been visited almost 2500 times in the past year and has been viewed by people in 29 different countries, and it is all of you that help to spread the word about the Superheroes and all that they do.  Without all of you the Superheroes would not get to make people outside of Nevada smile and heck, we don’t want to keep all the smiles to ourselves especially when they look as good as ours do.  I wish I could give you all a cape and make you a Superhero, but like I have said time and time again you do not need a cape to be Superhero, but seriously how cool are those capes!!

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!!!!!
